Titian

In " Titian's Venus and the Lute Player", George Martin Richter introduces Titian who surrounds his work with the subject matter of " The Venus" and the influence of " The Venus" through the works of Titian. Titian, whose real name is Tiziano Vecelli, has works of art that were struck by the eyes of many popes and princes in the time of the Renaissance. "Only very gradually did Titian show a greater interest in antique and humanistic ideas" (Richter 53) As a humanist, Titian portrayed many works of "The Venus" from portraying nudity and beauty of the female body though it took him a while to catch up with the Giogionesque revolution.

Deeper details on the composition and background of Titian's famous work

A piece of information that Chapter 13 did not succeed to address was how Titian built his work around the Madonna and the Venus. I felt this was interesting in support of how Titian was able to become a great figure in the Renaissance Movement in Venice. " This new type of Venus must have created immense interest... Representations of the Madonna became very scarce in this later period of Titian's life" ( Richter 53-54) Some of Titian's works that include Venus are Venus of Urbino and Venus and the Lute Player ( can also be known as Venus with an Organ Player, which is just another stage of composition)

I chose this JSTOR article because the title really appealed to me and also when I did a quick skim through the pages, I really enjoyed how Richter put his own thoughts into the topic/discussion. Not only that but Richter compares Titian's work to others who have had attempted to create many other stages of Venus such as Titian. " In the Duveen picture, the representation of Venus shows further changes and development." ( Richter 54 ) This helped me get a better understanding of the importance of the figure of Venus and how it was used for humanistic ideas. It also brought a deeper understanding as to why Titian was so focused on Venus as " Titian did not make up the subject on Venuses again before the thirties...and created for himself a new definitely original type of Venus" (Richter 52) It's interesting how Richter gives a deeper insight into Titian's work considering the fact it took Titian a while to get into the style of Giogionesque, yet Titian's works become a huge changer in the Renaissance.
